The Chair That Was Made for Him

A vintage swivel chair purchased at an Atlanta auction followed its owner to Houston. When its bearing mechanism failed, we rebuilt the chair with new steel bearings, period-style casters, and a handcrafted genuine-leather seat.

Before and After Comparison

Before-and-after comparison of a worn vintage swivel chair and its complete mechanical, wood, and leather restoration.
A chair once considered beyond repair returned to service with its comfort, character, and traditional appearance restored.

The Story Behind the Piece

He found the chair at an auction in Atlanta.

It was not the newest chair in the room, and it was certainly not the most polished. But the moment he sat in it, something felt right. The proportions suited him, the curved wooden back supported him comfortably, and the chair seemed to fit in a way that modern office chairs rarely do.

He bought it because it felt as though it had been made for him.

When he later moved from Atlanta to Houston, the chair came with him, along with the desk where it had become part of his daily routine. It was more than something to sit on. It had become part of his workspace and part of the familiar surroundings that made a new city feel like home.

Then the chair broke.

The failure was not limited to worn upholstery or a loose joint. Its rotating mechanism used an older serviceable bearing assembly that had come apart. The chair could no longer function as intended, and replacement parts were not available at the nearest hardware store.

He was devastated.

Replacing the chair would have been easy. Replacing the comfort, history, and connection he had developed with it would not.

We carefully rebuilt the wooden chair and disassembled its bearing mechanism. New steel bearing balls were installed so the rotating base could operate properly again. Rather than fitting it with modern plastic wheels that would change its character, we located a manufacturer in North Carolina that still produces casters resembling the originals.

The seat was then completely rebuilt and upholstered in genuine leather. Even the tufted buttons were made from the same leather so the finished seat would feel intentional and remain faithful to the chair's traditional appearance.

Once the wood, bearing assembly, casters, and leather seat were brought together, the chair was no longer a broken auction find.

It was his chair again.

The gentleman who had carried it from Atlanta to Houston was able to sit in the chair he thought he had lost—and see that what appeared to be beyond repair still had many years of useful life ahead.

Some chairs are replaced when they stop working.

Others have earned the effort required to bring them back.
