Three Generations, One Little Rocking Chair

A childhood rocking chair arrived in pieces just before the birth of a new baby. Its restoration became a surprise connecting a grandmother, her daughter, and the family's newest generation.

Before and After Comparison

Before-and-after comparison of a broken child rocking chair and its completed restoration.
From separated parts to a family heirloom ready for another child.

The Story Behind the Piece

The chair arrived at our workshop in pieces.

Its spindles had come loose, parts of the frame had separated, and it no longer resembled the little rocking chair it had once been. But the man who brought it to us did not see a broken piece of furniture. He saw an opportunity to bring an important family memory back to life.

The chair had originally belonged to his mother-in-law, who had used it when she was a child. Years later, it was passed down to her daughter—his wife—who also sat and played in the same chair growing up.

Now the couple was preparing to welcome their first child.

His mother-in-law was planning to travel from out of town to stay with them during and after the baby's arrival. Before she came, he wanted the rocking chair restored as a surprise for both his wife and her mother.

The goal was not simply to make the chair look new. It was to preserve the character of the original piece while making it secure and functional for another child.

We carefully reconstructed the chair, reassembled its frame, secured the separated components, and restored its warm wooden finish. Slowly, the pile of disconnected parts became a child's rocking chair again.

When completed, it was ready to take its place in the family once more—not as decoration, but as something the newest generation could actually use.

A grandmother would soon see the chair from her own childhood waiting in her daughter's home. A new mother would recognize a piece from her earliest years. And before long, their new baby would become the third generation to grow up with it.

Some furniture is valuable because of the materials from which it was made.

Other pieces become priceless because of the memories they carry.
