Custom Wooden Chessboard with Storage Drawer for Heirloom Pieces

The Story Behind the Piece

A client came to us with a collection of wooden chess pieces that held deep sentimental value. Handcrafted by her father, the pieces had lost their original luster over the years, and the original board was missing. For a long time, she was unsure of how to preserve and display this family heirloom. When her youngest son expressed a desire to have the set, she decided it was the perfect moment to restore them and commission a proper board.

We designed and built a custom wooden chessboard featuring a built-in storage drawer underneath. This integrated compartment provides a safe, dedicated space to keep the precious handmade chess pieces protected when not in play. The board itself was crafted with clean lines, highlighting the natural beauty of the wood grain.

Throughout the process, the customer had a very specific vision for the design. She requested that we avoid any added words, abstract designs, or patterns on the board. In her view, chess is a game of deep concentration, and she wanted the playing surface to remain clean and free of distractions. We carefully respected this request, keeping the focus entirely on clean woodworking.

The completed piece was received with great joy, and the client was so pleased with the results that she is planning to have two more custom boards crafted for her other two sons.
